This port is the major port of India attending the Eastern side and Central part of the nation. The Orissa state Chief Minister late Shri Biju Pattanaik was the founder of the Paradip port and is also called the father of Paradip port. The base of the port was first put down by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru  in the year 1962 on the 3rd January  close to the meeting place of the river Mahanadi with Bay of Bengal. The charge of running the Paradip port was taken from the Orissa Government by the Indian Government in the year 1965 on 1st June. The services of the port was opened to the trade dealings  in 1966 on 12th March  and it was officially announced in the year 1966 on 18th April  as the number eight Major Port of India by the Indian Government ranking first in the East Coast among all major ports of the country accredited later the independence.
